Washington, DC (PRWEB) January 19, 2010

The National Council for Community Behavioral Healthcare (National Council) is offering small emergency grants and free Mental Health First Aid training to support mental health efforts in the wake of the devastating Haiti earthquake.

“Our thoughts are with the people of Haiti and with their loved ones in the U.S. We commend the efforts of many agencies and individuals that are providing disaster relief. Our pockets are not deep but we are standing by to help in any way we can,” Linda Rosenberg, president and CEO of the National Council said.

Through its Project Helping Hands, the National Council offers small grants to organizations working to meet the mental health needs of Haitian survivors and loved ones in the U.S. Since 2005, Project Helping Hands has supported behavioral healthcare organizations responding to emergency mental health and addictions treatment needs in the wake of disaster — hiring treatment staff, setting up emergency outreach offices, and purchasing medications and emergency equipment.

It is estimated that up to 25 to 30 percent of people in the most vulnerable communities experience the onset of trauma and mental disorders in the wake of disaster. These needs usually manifest several weeks to months after a disaster, as the reality of loss and displacement sinks in. Those with pre-existing serious mental illnesses may be traumatized anew or displaced and need extra care and support.

Haitian populations in the U.S., concerned about the safety and whereabouts of any loved ones in Haiti, may also be experiencing acute anxiety and stress reactions. Further, it is likely that the U.S. will see a significant influx of surviving Haitians over the coming months and a good number will likely experience mental health issues, in addition to the challenges of settling into a new culture.

Free Mental Health First Aid USA (http://www.MentalHealthFirstAid.org) training is available for volunteers headed to help in Haiti in the coming months and for community groups and caring citizens working with Haitian populations in the U.S.

Mental Health First Aid USA — a collaboration of the National Council, the Maryland Department of Health and Mental Hygiene and the Missouri Department of Mental Health — equips members of the public with skills and resources to help someone developing a mental health problem or save someone experiencing a mental health crisis. Those trained in Mental Health First Aid can recognize the risk factors and warning signs of mental illness and connect persons in need with appropriate professional or other help, including peer and family support.

Those who wish to support the Haiti disaster mental health response may donate to the National Council’s Project Helping Hands at http://www.thenationalcouncil.org/cs/project_helping_hands.

The National Council is a not-for-profit, 501(c)(3) association of 1,700 behavioral healthcare organizations that provide treatment and rehabilitation for mental illnesses and addictions disorders to nearly six million adults, children and families in communities across the country.

Lake City, FL (PRWEB) May 17, 2012

Main Street Broadband, which provides Internet service to communities in Southern Georgia and North Florida, has signed an agreement to become the first commercial retailer of high-speed broadband Internet service powered by the North Florida Broadband Authority (NFBA).

The new service will provide significantly faster, high volume service to community anchor institutions, including schools, hospitals and government agencies, as well as residential and business customers, announced NFBA Chair Tommy Langford of Gilchrist County and Michael F. Mies, co-founder and chief executive officer of Main Street Broadband.

“Thanks to NFBA’s high-speed wireless network, we can expand the reach of our services and also provide much higher-capacity solutions to the rural communities in North Central Florida,” said Mies. “This is a great public-private partnership that leverages NFBA’s middle mile BTOP-funded network to provide much needed bandwidth.”

“We’re very pleased to have Main Street Broadband as our first commercial partner,” Langford said. “We know they are committed to providing residents, businesses and community institutions with affordable broadband services throughout North Central Florida.”

NFBA was formed in 2009 to provide high-speed broadband Internet infrastructure to an underserved and rural region of North Central Florida, including 12 counties and seven municipalities, through a federal grant from the National Telecommunications Infrastructure Administration.

The wireless network, scheduled to go live in phases through June, will provide high speed Internet for the first time to health care providers, schools, local governments, businesses and residential customers through cooperative agreements with local commercial service providers like Main Street Broadband.

Main Street Broadband has already installed the first anchor institution on the network, providing dedicated bandwidth to a medical facility in Branford, FL for transmission of high-resolution x-ray images.

To learn more about NFBA, go to http://www.NFBA.net. To learn more about Main Street Broadband and determine if high-speed broadband service powered by the NFBA is available in your area from Main Street Broadband, go to http://www.MainStreetBB.com or call 888-807-FAST(3278).

Boulder, Colorado (PRWEB) May 15, 2012

Medical Care International (MCI), “a nonprofit organization that coordinates volunteer medical missions to needy communities worldwide,” traveled to the Tibetan Plateau with the Tibetan-run “volun-tourism” organization Conscious Journeys. They assessed the health and sanitation conditions in rural villages and provided basic medical care with a focus on education and prevention of common ailments. MCI also brought medical supplies for the villages.

Doctors and nurses kicked off their trip by visiting the largest hospital in the county. They were also taken to visit a local primary school where the students greeted them with smiles and kata (traditional white scarves given to honored guests). They were given a tour of the community by one of the local village leaders, who briefed them on common issues regarding sanitation, garbage and human waste disposal, the villagers’ daily diets and diseases and ailments common to the area.

A two-day temporary clinic was set up in a local monastery, where they treated elderly and sick patients first. Two nurses checked blood pressure and recorded case histories while three doctors diagnosed patients and wrote prescriptions (high blood pressure seemed to be one of the area’s biggest health concerns). Village leaders were given booklets on basic sanitation and healthy diet, to help them continue to educate the villagers about proper healthcare after the team’s departure.

Doctors then visited a monastic school where they were greeted by children wearing Tibetan clothing donated by MCI. They set up a temporary clinic at the school and began treating students and other local patients. Over a hundred students and villagers were diagnosed and treated. The students prepared momos (Tibetan dumplings) and performed a traditional Tibetan dance performance in honor of their MCI guests.

In addition to providing medical care to rural villagers and students, medical volunteers also had the opportunity to visit regional sites including temples and monasteries, Paoma Mountain, the Museum of Thangka, and the Panda Breeding Center in Chengdu.

Conscious Journeys is the volun-tourism program of the NGO Tibetan Village Project. Tours focus on providing services to local communities, practicing sustainable travel, supporting local businesses and connecting in a positive and meaningful way with Tibetan communities across the plateau.

Minneapolis, MN (PRWEB) August 14, 2007

Health Fitness Corporation (“HFC”) (OTC BB: HFIT) today announced that former U.S. Senator Dave Durenberger, a nationally-recognized health policy thought leader, has been elected to its board of directors.

Active in Minnesota public life for more than 40 years, Durenberger’s experience in the U.S. Senate included 17 years on the influential Senate Finance Committee. He was the ranking member of the Health Subcommittee for a decade, serving six years as chairman.

Durenberger served three terms in the Senate, sponsoring numerous bills that focused on public health and safety. Among them were bills to ensure safe drinking water and clean air, the Americans with Disabilities Act, Continuity of Employment Health Insurance (COBRA), Maternal and Child Health amendments, measures to support Medicare, Medicaid and rural health policy, and acts to streamline and enhance health insurance coverage.

“Health Fitness Corporation warmly welcomes Dave Durenberger’s substantial health policy expertise to our board,” said Mark W. Sheffert, chairman of HFC’s board. “Sen. Durenberger is highly recognized and respected nationwide for his extensive knowledge of both business and health care. His insight and guidance will certainly be additive to the direction and governance of the organization.”

Durenberger has made health policy a focus since his retirement from the Senate in 1995. He is founder and chair of the National Institute of Health Policy, a not-for-profit forum for health care leaders throughout the Upper Midwest to collaborate on complex health care issues and to foster health care transformation. He is also senior health policy fellow at the University of St. Thomas College of Business in Minneapolis. In that role he serves on the faculty of the College of Business, teaching in medical group management programs, physician leadership and other graduate and executive education programs. Durenberger also teaches health policy at the University’s College of Law, contributes regularly to College of Business publications, and consults on curriculum design efforts for health policy courses. His bi-weekly “Commentary” on health policy and politics is a much-read predictor of health policy for more

than 10,000 national leaders. Durenberger is president of Policy Insight, LLC, a business consulting firm for health policy interests both in the United States and globally.

Durenberger continues to influence the future of health policy through his commission and board positions. He serves as commissioner, Medicare Payment Advisory Commission; commissioner, National Commission for Quality Long-term Care; special advisor to the Steering Committee, American Medical Group Association; advisory member, Council of Accountable Physician Practices; commissioner, Kaiser Commission on the Future of Medicaid and the Uninsured; commissioner, Americans for Generational Equity; board member, Center for the Study of Politics and Governance; co-chair, Minnesotan’s Military Appreciation Fund; member, MBA Public Policy Advisory Board, University of St. Thomas; board member, VocalEssence and ServeMinnesota; board member, National Committee on Quality Assurance; and board member, The Mercanti Group.

He was also appointed by Gov. Tim Pawlenty to chair the Minnesota Citizen’s Forum on Healthcare Costs, to explore health care cost drivers, citizen values, and to recommend health care reform in Minnesota, with input from more than 1,000 Minnesota citizens.

He is the recipient of numerous awards for leadership, among them the Leadership, Vision and Commitment Award from the Minnesota Governor’s Council on Developmental Disabilities; the Minnesota Medical Association’s Sova Award; the Lifetime Achievement Award in Health Care Quality Improvement, James Q. Cannon Memorial Endowment; George Mason University School of Public Policy Founders Award; and Lifetime Leadership Award, Voices for National Service. He is also an Honorary Fellow of the American Institute for Medical and Biological Engineering.

Charleston, South Carolina (PRWEB) May 12, 2012

Taylor has been helping women for over five years not only lose weight, but create fitness lifestyles for long term results. One of the biggest problems she sees today is how woman get so overwhelmed with work and family, the first thing they cut from their day is their workout. Getting in a workout is actually the one thing that should never be cut. This is why Taylor created a new line of 10 minute, intense, fat blasting circuit workouts for women.

Taylor says, “these workouts are not intended to supplement a full workout in my program. However, they are perfect for busy women that end up missing a workout or can’t seem to schedule a full workout during a specific day.” These workouts are perfect because they allow women to do them multiple times a day if necessary. Scientific studies have proven that three, ten minute workouts during the day are just as effective as one full thirty minute workout. That is exactly what Taylor’s new programs are intended to provide women… real options so they can sustain their results.

An example is her popular Burn Baby Burn workout. This is an intense body weight progression. Three sample exercises from this workout consist of spiderman pushups followed by donkey jumps and then straight into grueling burpies with a tuck jump. After just these three exercises, every major muscle in the body has been targeted to help support lean muscle growth.

“I have perfected these shorter programs after extensively testing my workout theory with my boot camps,” says Taylor. These workouts have not only been proven and extensively tested, but they are incredibly fun to do. Members of TheArtofWeightLifting.com not only get professional designed workout programs, but Taylor is a nutrition consultant as well. So it’s a complete system for for healthy living.

About TheArtofWeightLifting.com:

TheArtofWeightLifting.com is the creation of Taylor Ryan. She is a NASM certified trainer and Venice certified nutrition consultant. Taylor created TheArtofWeightLifting.com to help women learn about resistance training and proper eating habits. She wants women to achieve long term healthy living, not just short term weight loss. Plus she was sick and tired of seeing the poor quality of training women were receiving both in local gyms and other Internet sites that claim to help women.

San Jose, California (PRWEB) May 10, 2012

Follow us on LinkedIn – Currently, more than 1.5 billion people worldwide suffer from chronic pain of varying degrees. With increasing aged population and absence of a full-fledged pain management therapy, demand for better pain management therapies, addressing acute and chronic pain, is on the rise. The varied products used for pain management include non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), local anesthetics, anticonvulsants, opioids, acetaminophen, tricyclic antidepressants, patient-controlled dosing, electrical stimulation as well as implants. Pain management therapeutics market is characterized by regular developments and discoveries of new drugs, addressing pain related health ailment issues, such as neuropathic pain, psychogenic pain, post-surgical pain, headache, backache, AIDS, and cancer. Moreover, higher demand for more efficient medical devices for pain treatment, and drugs continue to drive the pain management market.

The pain management business constitutes a major segment of the pharmaceutical industry. Pain management market is impacted by several factors, including emergence of pain management clinics, availability of generic versions of branded analgesics, and introduction of new drugs into the marketplace. Patent expiries of several leading NSAID drugs have created new opportunities for generic drugs to foray into the pain management market. The emergence of pain management clinics has critically impacted the overall pain management market worldwide. The market shows considerable growth prospects, regardless of the generic incursion for major products in the global market.

Presently, Lyrica, an anti-convulsant, and Cymbalta, an anti-depressant drug, are the significant drugs in the pain management market. With increasing incidences of pain arising from various conditions, the demand for pain management drugs is increasing, specifically in the developing nations. Safety and side effects are the major challenges confronted by drug developers. New compounds exhibiting high levels of efficacy and safety are likely to garner significant growth and capture a sizeable share of the market in the years to follow.

The US represents the largest regional market for pain management worldwide, followed by Europe, as stated by the new market research report on Pain Management. The US market for chronic and acute pain management therapies is currently driven by increasing aging population. The opioid and non-opioid pain management pharmaceuticals market holds immense potential due to the significant unmet medical needs in the pain treatment segment, along with the recall of Bextra and Vioxx. However, growth in the market would be led by Asia-Pacific, which is projected to be the fastest growing regional market during the 2009-2017 period. With increasing incidence of pain arising from various conditions, the demand for pain management drugs is increasing in the developing nations. Latin America is projected to post a compounded annual growth rate of close to 8.8% during the analysis period. Segment-wise, Pain Management Drugs represent the largest segment, while Pain Management Services constitute the fastest growing segment worldwide.

Dynamics of the pain management drugs market witnessed significant changes in the recent years. The failure of several drugs, considered initially as promising, including the recent unsuccessful COX-2 inhibitors, prompted manufacturers and researchers to undertake many research programs. Meanwhile, failure of COX-2 inhibitors led to a significant decline in R&D in COX-2 class and encouraged pharmaceutical companies to concentrate on other new targets. A considerable success is witnessed in the larger pharmaceutical companies employing genomic technologies in their research programs.

Major players profiled in the report include AstraZeneca Plc., Eli Lilly and Company, Endo Pharmaceuticals, GlaxoSmithkline Plc., Johnson & Johnson, Merck & Co. Inc., Novartis, Pfizer Inc., Wyeth Inc., Sanofi, Purdue Pharma, among others.

The research report titled “Pain Management: A Global Strategic Business Report” announced by Global Industry Analysts Inc., provides a comprehensive review of the pain management market, current market trends, key growth drivers, overview of the major drug classes, insight into current leading and pipeline drugs, new product approvals, recent industry activity, and profiles of major/niche global as well as regional market participants. The report provides annual sales estimates and projections for the pain management market for years 2009 through 2017 by the following geographic markets – US, Canada, Japan, Europe, Asia-Pacific, Latin America, and Rest of World.
